A port is the part of MicroPython written for one family of chips. The firmware you download is built for a port, not for a board, and what the libraries can do follows from which port you picked. Eleven are built daily.

picking one
start with the pico
The Raspberry Pi Pico is cheap, well documented, and flashes over USB with nothing but a cable. If you are unsure, this is the one.
pick the esp32 if you want wifi
WiFi and Bluetooth are built in, there is far more memory than the ESP8266, and the radio is the reason most people pick this port.
stay on one family at first
Ports differ in which pins exist, what the GPIO class is called, and how much RAM is left. Learning one port properly is faster than skimming four.
check the port before you buy
Search the board on micropython.org/download. No result means no published firmware, and you will be building it yourself.
